All About Engagement Sessions

28 Feb 2016

You've seen them everywhere. Posted by your besties on Facebook, trending on Buzzfeed, and and flooding your Instagram. So, what's the deal with engagement photos? I'll tell you right now there is more to it than you might expect.

To begin with you might wonder why you even need engagement photos. The way I look at it, it's your photography test run (with some super fun results). The e-session is your chance to get to know me, how I work, and what you can expect on the big day. Most couple's have never been professionally photographed together so it's a great way to learn how you interact together in front of the camera too.

And, while we're on the subject of test runs, this is the perfect time to see how your wedding day makeup will photograph. Schedule a trial run with your makeup artist before the shoot and you'll be dolled up and ready to go for the shoot. I always recommend going in for a hair styling as well to give you a polished complete look for the session.

But enough with the practical reasons behind the e-session. The reality is engagement sessions are actually a ton of fun! It's the perfect excuse to plan a date day together and show off what you love to do the most. Bring props, play games, go grab a coffee, run in a field, whatever is your jam. I'm just be there to guide you to the best light and catch the moments as they unfold. I'm also pretty good at dropping a few cheesy jokes here and there.

Once all is said and done and you have your beautiful collection of fun and romantic engagement photos ... what the heck do you do with them? Well, aside from immediately sharing on Facebook and Instagram (of course) you have a chance to make some beautiful heirlooms. You can throw your favourite shot onto your save-the-dates, use them in your wedding day tear-jerker photo slideshow, they're even good for a few framed prints in the office. But my number one favourite thing is the guest book. It's like a mini-version of your wedding book; except your friends and family are totally allowed to write all over it. What could be a more perfect combination than some stunning photos of you and your boo along with messages of love from everyone who was there on the big day?

So now that you know a thing or two about your engagement session it's time to start planning for yours! Take some time to sit down together, chat about the things you'd love to see in your photos. Need some inspiration on what to wear? Check out my handy Pinterest board full of stylish ideas to get you started. Remember that coordination makes a huge impact on the final look of your photos.

If you would like some more info on engagement sessions (and wedding dates, of course) give me a shout. I always love meeting new people and I can't wait to hear your story!

Cheers!
